The 2021 FIM Supersport World Championship has been decided in Race 2 at the Circuito San Juan Villicum in Argentina during the Motul Argentinean Round in dramatic fashion. Dominique Aegerter (Ten Kate Racing Yamaha) took a 14^th podium of the season with third in Race 2 in San Juan whilst main title rival Steven Odendaal (Evan Bros. WorldSSP Yamaha Team) was taken out at Turn 1 on Lap 1 after Manuel Gonzalez (Yamaha ParkinGO Team) crashed. Both remounted but on Lap 1 but the South African crashed again on Lap 13 with a front-end fall at Turn 15. Therefore, Aegerter becomes World Champion for the first time in his career, whilst also giving Ten Kate Racing a tenth WorldSSP title.

1 – Dominique Aegerter wins his first World Championship in his rookie season. It’s the first time a Riders’ World Championship has been decided in Argentina in the WorldSBK paddock.

2 – He becomes the second Champion for Switzerland after Randy Krummenacher two years ago. For the first time since 2011-2013 (Great Britain: Chaz Davies and Sam Lowes), a country wins two titles in the space of three years with two different riders.

4 – Aegerter wins the Championship as a rookie. Excluding the first year (1999: Chambon), it’s the fourth time this happens after: 2009 (Cal Crutchlow); 2018 (Sandro Cortese); 2020 (Andrea Locatelli).

4 – Aegerter took the Championship winning his first race of the season in the fourth race: Race 2 at Estoril. It’s a rare occurrence in WorldSSP: excluding Andrew Pitt, who took the title in 2001 without a race win, and Stephane Chambon, who won for the first time in the seventh race of 1999, all other Championships have been won with the Champion winning at least once in the first three races of the season.

9 – Yamaha equals Honda as the most successful manufacturer in the Championship, taking the ninth riders’ Championship. They are followed by Kawasaki (4) and Suzuki (1). Yamaha is unbeaten since 2017.

10 – Aegerter returns Ten Kate Racing to the top in World Supersport, giving them their tenth World Supersport title and their first with Yamaha machinery. He is already the second-most successful rider for Yamaha in WorldSSP in terms of wins, two behind 2020 World Champion Andrea Locatelli.

14 –Aegerter’s title was clinched with a third place, his 14^th podium of the year, a record in WorldSSP.

15 – At 31 years, 1 month and 22 days, he will be 15^th in the age ranking at the first Championship. The record belongs to Chris Vermeulen (21 years 4 months, 2003).

17 – He is the 17^th Champion in history: the last five are all new champions after the most successful rider in history (Kenan Sofuoglu, 5 World Championship) won his last one in 2016. They are Lucas Mahias, Sandro Cortese, Randy Krummenacher, Andrea Locatelli and Dominique Aegerter.

83 – Aegerter’s ten wins in WorldSSP for Ten Kate Racing has seen the Dutch team move onto 83 wins in WorldSSP, the most of any team in the Championship. They could reach 85 with a double in Indonesia.

100 – With Race 1 victory at Misano, Aegerter gave Yamaha a 100^th win in WorldSSP.

381 – Aegerter’s has also clinched the title with the season record for points (381 to Locatelli’s 263 last year after Catalunya Race 2). Aegerter has the potential to set a new record for points in Indonesia.
